Embedded in architecture is its drive to encapsulate society, to articulate history, to yearn for timelessness, and to breathe life into the stage on which we live our lives. What lies in a journey toward a career in architecture is immense responsibility.

As freshmen step into the world of architectural studies, their aspirations should be reflected by a strong foundation of skills. Here are five essential skills that every freshman studying BS architecture in Manila should cultivate to set themselves up for limitless possibilities in being able to reshape the world around them:

Visionary Thinking

As stated by Frank Lloyd Wright, “an idea is salvation by imagination”. Architects are visionaries who shape the future through their designs. Freshmen should cultivate the ability to think beyond conventional boundaries and imagine transformative spaces. Visionary thinking consists of exploring new ideas, embracing innovative concepts, and pushing the limits of design.

Furthermore, resonating with David Adjaye’s famous quote– “Context is so important, not to mimic, but to become part of the place”– aspiring architects are also prompted to establish a profound understanding of architectural history and theory by immersing themselves in the educational study of architectural styles, historical movements, and influential architects. This knowledge empowers students with the ability to grasp the evolution of architectural design and thus draw inspiration from the past. Courses in architectural history and theory, alongside independent research and exploration elevates a student’s appreciation for their dynamic field.

Adaptability to Digital Technology

As is the case for all fields, driven by the modern ubiquity of technology, architectural design today relies heavily on various technical tools and software. Freshmen are prompted to familiarize themselves with foundational design tools such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Revit. These programs have become indispensable tools that empower architects to efficiently and persuasively create detailed blueprints, build information modeling, create 3D models, and design simulations of architectural projects. Developing proficiency in these design tools early on provides aspiring architects a competitive edge in such a way that their migration to technology embodies their ability to keep up with changing times and revolutionary methods to architecture.

Proficiency in Mathematics

Aspiring architects are also expected to be equipped with the necessary mathematical skills incorporated in their field of study, wherein concepts such as geometry, trigonometry, and algebra are crucial in architectural design.

Architects like Zaha Hadid are known for their innovative use of curves and dynamic forms, which often call for advanced geometric calculations. A solid and comprehensive understanding of mathematics allows aspiring architects to manipulate shapes, grasp spatial relationships, and bring to life intricate designs that challenge conventional architectural bounds.

As accentuated by Zaha Hadid herself, “there are 360 degrees, why stick to one?”. In this statement, she characterizes the idea that design should not be limited to conventional or static perspectives. Instead, architects are meant to explore and embrace the full spectrum of design possibilities, including curves, angles, and innovative shapes that push the boundaries of the norm.

Architecture is as much about solving complex problems as it is about creating aesthetically pleasing structures. Diving deeper into Zaha Hadid, a famous architect known as the “Queen of the Curve” in which she not only fundamentally altered the contours of modern architectural design, but also grappled with how to respond to the climate crisis through her works. In 2015, she emphasized sustainability as a defining challenge of her generation and highlighted the key role architects play in tackling such a momentous issue. Her problem-solving skills were brought to light in her sustainable projects, including the Bee’ah Headquarters in Sharjah, and Eco Park Stadium in the United Kingdom. Zaha Hadid’s works, grounded by her problem-solving skills, come to show that cultivating a mindset of curiosity and resilience prepares aspiring architects for the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of their field.

Communication

Aspiring architects must be able to convey their ideas clearly to clients, collaborators, and construction teams. This entails not only mastering verbal and written communication but also being adept at visually presenting concepts through sketches, blueprints, and 3D renderings. A great design remains just an idea if it cannot be effectively communicated. Therefore, freshmen in architecture should strive to refine their communication skills, ensuring that their designs are not only understood, but also embraced by all who encounter them.
